Byetone

Raster-Noton

Germany

Olaf Bender’s artistic starting point was in cinema, experimenting with 16 mm films and as a former member of the underground Eastern Germany band AG.Geige, which was founded by Frank Bretschneider. After the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 he worked as a music distributor, acquiring an experience which would push him to creeate his own platform, thus founding the Rastermusic label in 1996 together with Frank Bretschneider. He founded the Signal project together with Carsten Nicolai which led to the creation now legendary Raster-Noton label in 1999. He is responsible for graphic design and advertising in Raster-Noton’s management.

In 1999 Byetone is born as Bender’s personal project. His music is totally digital, assembling complex tones and sounds, using clicks and plug-ins, deconstructing rhythm elements with surgical precision: an amalgam of precision and groove. When performing live, Byetone uses visuals as if they were animated lights: abstract images which support abstract musical works – rhythm becomes its graphic equivalent. His latest work is “Death of a typographer” which was a real revolution last year. Chosen as best album of the year by specialized media and containing such overwhelmingly powerful tracks such as Plastic star, “d.o.a.t” is part of a special trilogy which these three visionaries released from Raster-Noton’s management to explain their personal interpretation of rhythm, techno and image.
