Daedelus

Ninja Tune

U.S.A.

Alfred Darlington is an atypical musician and composer - from the way he dresses at his shows (like a dandy from Victorian times) to the way he makes music and his expression and view on the world.

He was born in Santa Mónica in 1977, he got training in classic music and jazz and he later learnt to play a good number of instruments. He chose the name Daedelus because of his childhood obsessions with inventions and experiments. Having released 8 records and a good quantity of ep’s and 12’’s in labels such as Plug Research, Eastern Development, Mush o Ninja Tune, he’s one of the most interesting artists today, a music lover, an artist from head to foot who does not fear any music label. In 2002 he released “Invention” where he mixed samples from the 50s and 60s with new generation digital glitches and since 2003 he uses the revolutionary Monome in his concerts – an interface created with the freeware platform MAX/MSP which, in his own words, “is a fundamental tool for massive improvisation” and he manages to do so, creating live shows which become impressive exercises in improvisation where his amalgam of pop culture, cinema references, jazz, electronic hip hop, IDM and raver-like electronica shape a huge non-stop-dancing mash-up.

His latest work “Love to make music to” is, in Alfred’s words, “an imaginary world from an age that never was. An addictive record which takes me back to my days in the YMCA in London, when I first heard the word rave…”.
