For many years, the British Kel McKeown has silently carved out a well-deserved place in the list of artists with most exposure nowadays. With a sound clearly indebted to such fundamental projects as Boards of Canada, Four Tet or Prefuse 73, Kelpe has released throughout these years solid statements of his blend of abstract hip hop, idm, an acid touch and powerful beats.
His largely acclaimed first work “Sea inside body”, published in 2005, was followed by a few eps and remixes to definetely stand out in 2008 with “Ex-aquarium”, a huge piece of work with which Kel has managed to appear in a good number of 2008 “best of” lists.
With a sound he describes as a blend of references that go from the bleeps and beats of classic Warp artists, to John Renbourn’s ghostly folk, Steve Reich’s minimalism or Tortoise’s percussive spaces, Kelpe manages to carry out explosive live performances with drummer Chris Walmsley’s contribution and in which the absorbing and enveloping capacity of his music is multiplied exponentially.
