Children of The Light

Children of the Light is the collaboration of Amsterdam-based visual artists Christopher Gabriel (1980 Oslo) and Arnout Hulskamp (1978 Amsterdam). Gabriel and Hulskamp met at the progressive nightclub TrouwAmsterdam where they both had a residency.
As a duo they tend to both entrance and mystify the public, creating abstract and highly spherical scenographies and installations. In these controlled (interactive) environments the light becomes the main character, inviting the spectator for a dialogue.

After the DARKSIDE 2014 world tour, Children of the Light made a live scenography for HOWLING and last year for Nicolas Jaar’s world tour. In recent years their installation work has been on show at the New Institute, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, GlowNext, TodaysArt Den Haag and TodaysArt Japan, Day for Night, Galerie Gabriel Rolt, STRP Biënnale and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.

At the moment Children of the Light have their studio at De School, where they have a long term residency.
Children of the Light have been guest teachers at the Academy for Architecture and currently they are teaching the architecture department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.

Diapositive is about light and darkness.

Super bright daylight LEDs are mounted and directed both in and outwards on a rotating black metal frame. The animated light illuminates smoke and creates shapes in the air. The continuous transformation brings the image to life.

Viewers can not only walk around it and see it from different perspectives, they will also have the feeling they can touch the image: with strong bright shapes, the dark parts function as black holes, resulting in an almost tactile darkness.

The hypnotic sensation is a continuation of Children of the Light’s research into treating light as matter.
