Within the cultural programme organized by the Town Council of Mieres for the last quarter of 2024, including a wide variety of activities for all audiences, next Thursday October 3 the audiovisual installation Alcove LTD opens at Parque Aníbal Vázquez, a work by Swiss collective Encor.
The exhibition of this piece, promoted by the Cultural Department of Mieres’ Town Council, curated by L.E.V. (Laboratorio de Electrónica Visual) and supported by the Swiss Foundation for Culture Pro Helvetia, will turn this public space of the town into a place for interaction and discovery which directly appeals to its visitors.
The Encor studio, founded in 2016 by Swiss artists Mirko Eremita, David Houncheringer, Valerio Spoletini, and Manuel Oberholzer, uses a six-meter recycled container as the canvas and object of the installation. At Alcove LTD, this transparent container turns into a moving light box, visible from all angles, capturing the reflections of the visitors through liquid crystal films to create a light and sound trompe l’oeil which distorts their perception. Light tubes and white smoke reverse and liven up the inside, creating an interplay of reflections, blur effects, contrasts and separations to show an immersive experience which invites us to look inside ourselves and change the way we observe our surroundings.
With this project, Encor studio aims to question the concept of isolation, to reflect on the mutation of spaces, and to invite us to look beyond the surface, by reusing and exploiting a discarded object, a freight container, for artistic purposes and to increase its lifespan.
The piece shown in Mieres is a new version of a first work by the studio, shown in Taiwan in 2020 in a closed space. After being reinterpreted in their exhibition in Lyon, based on the portable nature of the container, the work becomes nomadic and without borders, giving it a new meaning which changes depending on the space it is installed.
About Encor
Swiss art studio Encor explores light and sound to project over a world which, as the proprieties of light itself, retains most of its mystery and keeps beyond of our total understanding. Encor documents our place in time by creating kinetic sculptures, movement design, contemporary architecture, installations and sound displays, combining their own tools and technologies with social processes and assorted materials. The identity of the artists belonging to the group is reinforced by collaboration, with each member contributing their unique skills and perspectives to every project.
