Kexin Hao: Future Dance of Nostalgia

VORTEX. Virtual Reality Experiences and VR Cinema

September 22-25
Nave 17. Matadero

Future Dance of Nostalgia, created by visual artist and designer Kexin Hao, born in Beijing and based in The Netherlands, combines ethnographic research, rhythmic choreography and gaming.

Taking the form of classic dancing video games such as Just Dance, the project invites the audience to perform a choreography that extracts and abstracts the movements found in the pre-industrial, heavy physical labor. Movements that are quantified, measured, and evaluated by motion tracking technology while being performed. Historical archives of work songs provide the inspiration for the music that renders the old tales and melodies into clubbing beats that lead the dance.

Future Dance of Nostalgia is a work commissioned by iii (instrumentinventors.org) and created in collaboration with Leonardo Scarin (game design), Ludmila Rodrigues (choreography), Rachwill Breidel (music) and Pedro Gossler (videography, 3D).

Financed by the European Union-NextGenerationEU, through the Public Aid subsidy for the promotion of the video game sector and other forms of digital creation within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Ministry of Culture.
