Building on a path initiated two years ago, the collaboration between the Mieres Town Council and L.E.V. (Laboratorio de Electrónica Visual) consolidates an ongoing partnership with a long-term vision. A far-reaching strategy committed to integrating art and digital creation into the local territory. Its goal is to foster a stable ecosystem of dialogue between new media and emerging technological tools and the public, encouraging processes of exchange, learning and active participation while strengthening the link between cultural innovation and local contexts.
EOn this occasion, the Mieres Town Council and LEV present an an interactive experience somewhere between a video game and a documentary, which visitors can enjoy through virtual reality headsets at the Exhibition Hall of Mieres Centru Cultural (MCC). The activity falls within the field of mixed realities, a cutting-edge technology in digital art that merges the physical world with augmented realities, enabling real-time interaction with virtual elements within the same space.
Directed by May Abdalla and Barry Gene Murphy, IMPULSE: PLAYING WITH REALITY is a mixed reality experience that, through an immersive narrative approach, offers a contemporary perspective on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This installation plunges the audience into the minds of those who live on the boundary between order and chaos, challenging the pathologising narratives that have shaped the experience of people with this unique form of cognition.
Lasting forty minutes and narrated in English by acclaimed actress Tilda Swinton, this mixed reality experience invites the audience to immerse themselves in the stories of four people whose choices have defined their lives. The project presents diverse narratives in a colourful and meticulously crafted setting, where lthe boundaries between reality and perception blur, offering an insightful portrayal of the creativity, chaos and intensity of ADHD.
Despite being widely misunderstood, ADHD can have a profound effect on those who experience it, which is why raising awareness is essential and can transform lives. Combining personal testimonies and sensory environments, this work offers an artistic approach to a condition far more common than we might imagine. Through an ingenious interplay of first-person accounts, it invites us to understand the experiences of those who live with it. Each participant can immerse themselves in the experience through virtual reality headsets to tackle real-world challenges. But this is not just about playing — it is about building empathy and driving social change through entertainment and technology
Awarded the prize for excellence in immersive experiences at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, this project premiered its Spanish-language version at LEV 2025. The piece also belongs to the Games for Change (G4C) educational programme , an international non-profit organisation that since 2004 has promoted and supported the use of video games and interactive media as tools for generating social and educational impact in the real world.
