Lubomyr Melnyk & SPIME.IM feat. Julia Kent: The End Of The World
Sunday, May 1. 8:30 pm
Teatro Jovellanos
Within the framework of the 2022 edition of L.E.V. Festival, the Jovellanos Theater presents the Spanish premiere of The End Of The World, an impactful multimedia and immersive performance created by Ukrainian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk, the collective SPIME.IMfrom Turin and Canadian cellist Julia Kent.
The project is named after Melnyk’s eponymous 2018 piano composition, giving form to a more complete, monumental and collaborative work, in which each section is able to depart from the principal concept in multiple acoustic directions. Following a long period of solo composition, Melnyk combined his characteristic natural sound elements with electric and acoustic arrangements by Julia Kent and digital timbres from SPIME.IM collective, integrated with virtual interactions based on parameters and datasets deriving from current climatic changes and environmental events. Part of SPIME.IM’s work for this project was developed during an artistic residency that took place at Teatro de la Laboral in Gijón as part of the 2021 edition of L.E.V.
The result is a major-length piece with exquisite melodies and dramatic chaos mixed into a musical story, describing the eminent death of the World from misguided governments and industries, ending with our hope for survival.
This performance will also have the participation of Laura Cotarelo Lombardero, soprano born in 1981 in Rüsselsheim (Germany) and violin and viola student at the Gijón Conservatory, who has collaborated with multiple musical groups in the country.
